President Nasheed has today met with the Commonwealth’s Special Envoy for the Maldives, Sir Donarld McKinnon.

The meeting was held to discuss the ongoing political situation in the Maldives. During the meeting President Nasheed highlighted the importance of early presidential elections within this calendar year to legitimize the Government and to put the democratic process back in place.

Furthermore, President Nasheed also discussed the consequences of opening the Majlis without reaching political agreement to hold early elections.

Mr. McKinnon reassured Commonwealth’s commitment to mediate and to assist in institutional strengthening for the Majlis, Elections Commission, and the Judiciary.
