President Nasheed Calls on Government to “pull back from the brink” on airport issue

President Mohamed Nasheed has called on the Maldivian government to reconsider its decision to take control of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport from GMR.

President Waheed’s administration has announced a unilateral deadline for GMR to vacate the airport by the end of Friday, despite ongoing arbitration proceedings in Singapore.

President Nasheed said the government must “pull back from the brink and cease its counter-productive behaviour, which is damaging the nation’s economy and bilateral relations.”

“The Maldives is rapidly developing a reputation among foreign investors akin to Zimbabwe, where government might is right and contract law counts for nothing,” President Nasheed warned.

President Nasheed also called on the government to “cease its harassment of elected officials and members of the political opposition”.
