President Nasheed Concludes his Visit to India

President Nasheed today concluded his visit to India. During the week in India he met with journalists, think tanks and political and industry leaders in the wider effort to lobby for early presidential elections in the Maldives.

He also met with the senior Government officials including the Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Manmohan Singh, National Security Advisor Mr. Shiv Shankar Menon and the Foreign Secretary Mr. Ranjan Mathai. The meetings were focused on the current political crisis Maldives faces since the transfer of power on February 7, which ousted the country’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Nasheed in a coup backed by elements in the military and police forces.

Prime Minister stressed on the importance of continuing constructive dialogue among political parties and to ensure success of the Indian Foreign Secretary mediated road map that was agreed by all political parties in mid February. Government of India assured their support to ensure the road map will be honoured and therefore must lead to early presidential elections in the Maldives.

President Nasheed thanked the Prime Minister for their continued support to the Maldives and the support of both the Indian Government and the people of India in the democratization process.
