Last night President Nasheed launched the documentary “The Island President” with dhivehi subtitles at an event organised by Raaje TV at Nasandhura Palace. This documentary follows the efforts of President Nasheed to tackle climate change, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009.
President Nasheed also took part in a TV program held by Raaje TV about the launching. In his interview for the program President Nasheed spoke about the adverse effects climate change has not only on the Maldives but on the world in general. He stated that we needed to decrease our dependency on oil and that an MDP government would work towards developing and promoting alternative sustainable energy. President Nasheed also signed all copies of “The Island President-with dhivehi subtitles” that were sold yesterday.
The documentary “The Island President” was also shown yesterday on CBS, America’s largest TV station in order to mark Earth Day and screened at universities in the United States to mark this years Earth Day.
“The Island President” has won the “People’sChoice Award” at the Toronto International Film Festival and the “Pare Lorentz Award” by International Documentary Association.
